Willow Springs Open SpaceFor the Sake of Open Space

The Town of Cave Creek is engaged in a monumental effort to preserve pristine Sonoran Desert lands north of the Phoenix metropolitan area.

By annexing over 6,000 acres of State Trust Land into the Town, Cave Creek negotiated a plan to preserve over  4,000 acres as permanent open space which will be used for hiking, mountain biking, wildlife viewing and as a buffer against rapid urban expansion. This land must be purchased from the State Land Department. To raise the funds necessary for this critical preservation effort, the Town is hosting a number of special events to showcase the lands being protected, generate  public interest and raise money                                                                                         for acquisition.

Birth of the Cave Creek Bicycle Festival

The scenic roads through Cave Creek are used by thousands of bicyclists (both road and mountain bike) each month with many local cycling clubs riding north from the Phoenix metropolitan area to experience the cooler temperatures, grand vistas, friendly small town atmosphere and challenging hills. But amazingly, no cycling event has begun and ended in Cave Creek. Many avid cyclists live in or near Cave Creek and when they heard of the opportunity to host a cycling event in their own home town, they jumped at the idea. The local bicycle shop, Flat Tire Bike Shop, and a number of businesses have provided support for the initial organizing efforts.

Rather than a single bicycle ride, the organizers envisioned a weekend-long festival celebrating the active lifestyle opportunities which exist in the surrounding Tonto National ForestSpur Cross Ranch Conservation Area and Cave Creek Regional Park. With the addition of the 4,000 acres being purchased by the Town, Cave Creek  will encompass nearly 10,000 acres of land available for outdoor activities. More open space per capita than any other city or town in Arizona.
